A ball of mass m is pushed down the wall...

A ball of mass m is pushed down the wall of hemispherical bowl from point A. It just rises up to edge Q of the bowl. Find the speed at which ball is pushed down.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

From law of conservation of energy

Total energy at A = Total energy at Q
`(1)/(2)mv^(2)+mgh=0+mgR`
`(1)/(2)mv^(2)=mg(R-h)`
`therefore v^(2)=2g(R-h)`
or `v=sqrt(2g(R-h))`

A kid of mass M stands at the edge of a platform of radius R which can be freely rotated about its axis. The moment of inertia of the platform is I . The system is at rest when a friend throws as ball of mass m and the kid catches it. If the velocity of the ball is v horizontally along the tangent to the edge of the platform when it was caught by the kid find the angular speed of the platform after the event.

Figure shows water in a container having 2.0-mm thick walls made of a material of thermal conductivity 0.50Wm^(-1)C^(-1) . The container is kept in a melting-ice bath at 0^(@)C . The total surface area in contact with water is 0.05m^(2) . A wheel is clamped inside the water and is coupled to a block of mass M as shown in the figure. As the goes down, the wheel rotates. It is found that after some time a steady state is reached in which the block goes down with a constant speed of 10cms^(-1) and the temperature of the water remains constant at 1.0^(@)C .Find the mass M of the block. Assume that the heat flow out of the water only through the walls in contact. Take g=10ms^(-2) .

A hemispherical bowl of radius R is set rotating about its axis of symmetry which is kept vertical. A small block kept in the bowl rotates with the bowl without slipping on its surface. If the surfaces of the bowl is smooth, and the angel made by the radius through the block with the vertical is theta , find the angular speed at which the bowl is rotating.
