What is the stopping distance for a vehicle of mass m moving with speed v along a level road, if the co-efficient of friction between the tyres and the road is `mu`?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When the vehicle of mass m is moving with velocity v, the kinetic energy of the vehicle `KE=((1)/(2))mv^(2)` and if s is the stopping distance, then work done by friction.
`W=fscostheta=mumgscos180^(@)`
So by work - Energy theorem,
`W=Deltak=k_(f)-k_(i)`
i.e., `-mumgs=0-(1)/(2)mv^(2)ors=(v^(2))/(2mug)`

A circular road of radius r is banked for a speed v=40 km/hr. A car of mass m attempts to go on the circular road. The firctioncoefficient between the tyre and the road is negligible.

In the section 3.7.3 (Banking of road) we have not included the friction exerted by the road on the car. Suppose the coefficient of static friction between the car tyre and the surface of the road is mu_s , calculate the minimum speed with which the car can take safe turn? When the car takes turn in the banked road, the following three forces act on the car. (1) The gravitational force mg acting downwards (2) The normal force N acting perpendicular to the surface of the road (3) The static frictional force f acting on the car along the surface.
