A bolt of mass 0.3 kg falls from the ceiling of an elevator moving down with a uniform speed of `7ms^(-1)`. If hits the floors of the elevator (length of the elevator 3m) and does not rebound. What is the heat produced by the impact?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Mass `m=0.3kg`
height `h=3m`
Accleration due to gravity `g=9.8ms^(-2)`.
Potential energy lost by the bolt
= mgh
`=0.3xx9.8xx3=8.82J`
As the bolt does not rebound, the energy is converted into heat.
Heat produced = 8.82 J.
