`.^22 Ne` nucleus after absorbing energy decays into two `alpha-`particles and an unknown nucleus. The unknown nucleus is.

A

nitrogen

B

carbon

C

boron

D

oxygen

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

Atomic number of neon is `10`
By the emission of two `alpha`-particles, atomic number will be reduced by `4`. Therefore, atomic number of the unknown element will be `Z=10-4=6`
Similarly mass number of the unknown element will be `A=22-2xx4=14`
`:.` Unknown nucleus is carbon `(A=14, Z=6)`

Statement-1: Distance of closest approach of alpha particle to the nucleus is always greater than the size of the nucleus. Statement-2: Strong nuclear repulsion does not allow alpha particle to reach the surface of nucleus.

Initially the nucleus of radium 226 is at rest. It decays due to which and alpha particle and the nucleus of radon are created. The released energy during the decay is 4.87 Mev, which appears as the kinetic energy of the two resulted particles [m_(alpha)=4.002"amu",m_("Rn")=22.017"amu"] Kinetic energies of alpha particle & radon nucleus are respectively
