Fibroblasts are the principal cells of areolar tissue. Fibroblasts synthesize two kinds of proteins-collagen and elastin. The tensile strengthe of collagen fibres and the elasticity fibres prevent displacement and injury of tissues and organs under mechanical stress. Collagen fibres are aslo laid down at sites of injury and hlep in tissus repair.
