Assertion (A) : In a food chain members of successive higher levels are fewer in number.
Reason (R ): Number of organisms at any trophic level depends upon the availability of organisms which serve as food at the lower level.

A

If both the assertion and the reason are true and the reason is a correct explanation of the assertion

B

If both the assertion and reason are true but the reason is not a correct explanation of the assertion

The correct Answer is:
A

Each food chain contains many steps like producers, herbivores, primary carnivores and so on. Each step of the food chain is called trophic level. Number of organisms at any trophic level depends upon the avilability of food. In grassland ecosystem the maximum number of organisms are found in lower tropic level but in forest ecosyystem and parasitic food chain it is reverse.
