Mole fraction of ethanol in ethanol-wate...

Mole fraction of ethanol in ethanol-water system is 0.25. What is the percent concentration of ethanol by weight of the solution ?

Text Solution

Mole fraction of ethanol `(x_(B))=0.25`
Mole fraction of water `(x_(A)`=0.75.
By definiton , `x_(B)=n_(B)/(n_(B)+n_(A)),x_(A)=n_(A)/(n_(B)+n_(A)),n_(B)/n_(A)=x_(B)/x_(A)=(0.25)/(0.75)=1/3`
`W_(B)/M_(B)xxM_(A)/W_(A)=1/3orW_(B)/W_(A)xx((18g mol^(-1)))/((46g mol^(-1)))=1/3 or W_(B)/W_(A)=46/18xx1/3=46/54`
This means that if weight of ethanol is 46g, that of water will be 54 g.
Percent concentration of ethanol=46/100xx100=46%
