Certain solutes donot behave normally in solution in the sense that they may either undergo dissocition or association. As a result, the number of solute particles in solution cnange. Since the colligative properties are linked with the number of particles, the show abnormal results. In teh same way, the nilecular masses of these solutes also show abnormal results. The exact behaviour of the solute in solution and the extent of association or dissociation can be exprssed in terms of Van't Hoff factor (i) and degree of association of dissociation `(alpha)`.
