Why vapour pressure of a liquid decreases when a non`-` volatile solute is added to it ?

Text Solution

Evaporation always occure from the surface. The particles of the non-volatile solute occupy some surface area of the solvent. Therefore, extent of eveporation decreses and the vapour presure of the solution decreases on adding a non-volatile solute to the solvent.

The vapour pressure of a liquid decreases by 10 torr when a non-volatile solute is dissolved. The mole fraction of the solute in solution is 0.1. What would be the mole fraction of the liquid if the decrease in vapour pressure is 20 torr, the same solute being dissolved?

The vapour pressure of a pure liquid is 0.80 atm. When a non-volatile solute is added to this liquid, its vapour pressure drops to 0.60 atm. The mole fraction of the solute in the solution is

The vapour pressure of a solvent decreases by 5.4 torr when a non-volatile solute is added. In this solution, mole fraction of solute is 0.2. What would be mole fraction of the solvent if decreases in vapour pressure is 16.2 torr ?

How is the vapour pressure of a solvent affected when a non volatile solute is dissolved in it?

The vapour pressure of pure liquid solvent 0.50 atm. When a non-volatile solute B is added to the solvent, its vapour pressure drops to 0.30 atm. Thus, mole fraction of the component B is
