What are the expected products of hydrolysis of lactose ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The hydrolysis of lactose (disaccharide) can be done either with dilute HCl or with enzyme lactase. D-glucose and D-galactose are the products of hydrolysis. Both of them are monosaccharides with molecular formula `C_(6)H_(12)O_(6)`.
`underset("Lactose")(C_(12)H_(22)O_(11))+H_(2)O overset("Hydrolysis")rarr underset("D-glucose")(C_(6)H_(12)O_(6))+underset("D-galactose")(C_(6)H_(12)O_(6))`
