How do you explain the presence of all the six carbon atoms in glucose in a straight chain?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Upon prologed heating with HI in the presence of red phosphorus, glucose gives n-hexane which is a straight chain molecule. This shows that all the six carbon atoms in the glucose represent a straight chain.
`underset("Glucose")(C_(6)H_(12)O_(6))overset(HI/P)underset("Reduction")rarr underset("n-hexane")(CH_(3)CH_(2)CH_(2)CH_(2)CH_(3))`
