Why do people sprinkel water on a roof after a hot summer day ?

Water has a large heat of vporisation. In a hot summer day, the roof is quite hot. Water absorbs a large amount of heat from the roof for its vaporisation. The roof gets sufficiently cool and one can sleep comfortably.
