Two elements X and Y have atomic numbers 12 and I 6 respectively. Write the electronic configuration for these elements. To which period of the modern periodic table do these two elements belong ? What type of bond will be formed between them and why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electronic configuration : X (Z = 12), 2, 8, 2
Electronic configuration : Y (Z = 16), 2, 8, 6
Both these elements are present in third period since they have three electron shells. These are likely to form an ionic bond as a result of transference of two electrons from element X to the element Y. The compound will form compound XY.
