How does the tendency of the elements to lose electrons change in the Modern Periodic Table in
(i) a group, (ii) a period and why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) The tendency to lose electrons increases down a group since the atomic size increases and electrons experience less attraction towards the nucleus.
(ii) The tendency to lose electrons decreases along a period since the electrons are filled in the same shell i.e., valence shell. Their attraction towards the nucleus increases due to decrease in atomic size.
