The electronic configuration of an element 'X' is 2, 8, 6. To which group and period of the modern periodic table does 'X' belongs ? State its valency and justify your answer in each case.

The element 'X' with electronic configuration 2, 8, 6 (Z = 16) is sulphur. It is placed in group 16 of the modern periodic table. lnfact the element with configuration 2, 8, 8 is a noble gas Argon (Ar) and is present in group 18. Therefore, sulphur is placed in group 16 i.e. two places to the left valency of the element (X) : 2(8 - 6)
