Complete combustion of a sample of hydrocarbon Q gives 0.66 g of `CO_2 ` and 0.36 g of `H_2O`.The emptical formula of the compound is

A

`CH_(2)`

B

`C_(3)H_(4)`

C

`C_(3)H_(8)`

D

`C_(4)H_(8)`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

Let the mass of organic compound is a g
`% of C =(12)/(44)xx(0.66)(a)xx100`
and relative number of C-atoms
`=(12)/(44)xx(0.66)/(x)xx(100)/(2)=(3)/(2x)`
`% of H =(2)/(18)xx(0.36)/(100)x`
and relative number of H-atoms
`=(2)/(18)xx(0.36)/(x)xx(100)/(1)=(4)/(x)`
`therefore ` Simplest ratio of atomes of C and H
`=(3)/(2x):(4)/(x)=3:8`
Hence empirical formula `=C_(3)H_(8).`
