Simple distillation can be used to separate

A

a mixture of benzene (b.p. 80°C) and thiopene (b.p. 84°C)

B

a mixture of ethanol (b.p. 78°C) and water (b.p.`100^(@)`C

C

a mixture of ether (b.p. 35°C) and toluene

D

None of the above.

The correct Answer is:
C

Simple distillation is used when the boiling points of the components of a binary mixture differ by more than `10^(@)`C.
But since water and ethanol form hydrogen bonds, they distil together even though their boil-ing points differ considerably i.e., `21-9^(@)`C (op-tion B). Hence a mixture of ether and toluene which differ in their boiling points by `75^(@)`C is separated by simple distillation.
