Find the values of x and y in the following rectangle :

We know that the opposite sides of a rectangle are equal
`therefore` 3x + y = 7 …(1)
x + 3y = 13 …(2)
9x + 3y = 21 [from (1)]
`{:(" x + 3y = 13"),( " "ul"- - -"),("On subtracting, 8x =8"):}`
x = 1
Now, from (1), 3 (1) + y = 7
implies y = 7 - 3
implies y = 4
Hence, the required values of x and y are 1 and 4 respectively.
