A chord 16 cm long is 6 cm distant form the centre of the circle . Find the diameter of the circle.

In the adjoining figure,
`AB=16cm`
`OM=6cm`
Now, `BM =(1)/(2)AB`
(`because` perpenduucalr drawn from cnetre to the chord bisects the chord)
`=(1)/(2) xx16=8cm`
In `Delta BOM`,
`BO^2=OM^2+BM^2` (by phythagoras theorem)
`=6^2+8^2=36+64=100`
`BO=sqrt(100) =10 cm`
`therefore` Diameter of circle `=2xxBO=2xx10=20 cm `
