Hydrogen generally form covalent compounds. Give reason

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The compounds of hydrogen are generally. This is mainly due to high ionisation enthalpy of the element. `(Delta_(i)H_(1)=1312KJmol^(-1))`. As a result it cannot accept an electron easily to form `H^(-)` ion (noble gas configuratoin). Similarly, it is not a positive to lse electron to from `H^(+)` ion beceause the size of ion (proton) in extremely small and it cannot exist indepedently. Therefore. the compounds of hydrogen are generally covalent in nature in which hydrogen atom shares its electrons with atoms of other elements (generally non metals)
