A hydrocarbon `C_(5)H_(10)` does not react with chlorine in dark but gives a single monochloro compound `C_(5)H_(9)Cl` in bright sunlight. Identify the hydrocarbon.

Text Solution

(i). The hydrocarbon with molecular formula `C_(5)H_(10)` is either an alkene or cycloalkane.
(ii). Since the hydrocarbon does not react with chlorine `(Cl_(2))` in the dark, it is not an alkene.
(iii). As it formes only single monochloroderivative in bright sun light, it is cyclopentane which is symmetrical. in this all the ten hydrogen atoms are identical.
