Hydrocarbon [A] with molecular formula `C_(8)H_(8)` gave the following reaction:
(a). On shaking with bromine, a bromoderivative `[B]C_(8)H_(8)Br_(2)` was formed
(b). Vigorous oxidation of hydrocarbon with alkaline `KMnO_(4)` gave the monobasic acid [C]. ltBrgt (c). Acid [C] on distillation with sodalime gave `C_(6)H_(6)`
Deduce the structures of [A]. [B] and [C] and write the reactions involved.

Since the acidc [A] on distillation with sodalime `(NaOH//CaO)` gave `C_(6)H_(6)`, the acid is `C_(6)H_(5)COOH`. The hydrocarbon [A] with molecualr formula `C_(8)H_(8)` is an aromatic hydrocarbon and is expected to be unsaturated in nature. Since it forms a dibromoderivative on reacting with bromine, the hydrocarbon has atleast one double bond in the side chain.t he structural formula `C_(8)H_(8)` suggests taht the hydrocarbon is styrene `(C_(6)H_(5)CH=CH_(2))`. the reactions invovled are listed as follows.
