The mass of carbon anode consumed (giving only carbon dioxide) in the production of `270 kg` of aluminium metal from bauxite by the Hall process is

A

180 kg

B

270 kg

C

540 kg

D

90 kg

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

In Hall and Heroult process,
`2 Al_(2)O_(3)+4Cto4Al+2CO_(2)+2CO`
but for the removal of only `CO_(2)` , following equation is possible .
`2Al_(2)O_(3)+underset(=36)underset(3xx12)(3C)tounderset(=108)underset(3xx12)(4Al)+3CO_(2)`
`:'` For 108 g of Al , 36 g of C is required in above reaction.
`:.` For `270xx1010^(3)` g of A1 required amount of C
`=(36)/(108)xx270xx10^(3)`
`=90xx10^(3)g=90kg`
