Give a chemical test to distinguish between methanol and ethanol.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As ethanol contains the hydroxy ethyl group, it will conform to iodoform test, that is when treated with `I_(2)` in NaOH a yellow ppt of iodoform is obtained along with the sodium salt of methanoic acid. As for methanol, there is neither a methyl ketone nor a hydroxy ethyl group so it does not give iodoform test.
