Why does only a slow neutron (.03 eV energy) cause the fission in the uranium nucleus and not the fast one ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Slow neutron stays in the nucleus for required optimum time and distrubs the configuration of nucleus.

A slow neutron can cause fission in

A : Fast moving neutrons do not cause fission of a uranium nucleus. R: A fast moving neutron spends very little time inside the nucleus.

Moderator is used in a nuclear to slow down fast neutrons generated after a fission event in the reactor consider a fast neutron (mass m_(n) ) moving at speed v. The neutron hits a moderator nucleus (Mass M), which is originally static, and gets scattered elastically by 180^(@) (a) Find te rato of kinetic energy of the neutron after and before collision. (b) Show that when Mgtgtm_(n) , neutron does not lose much energy and therefore, a moderator should have a small mass number.

Why does a fast car slow down if its engine switched off ?

Find the number of fissions required to produce a power of 2,000 W, if 200 MeV of energy is produced in the fission of single uranium nucleus.

On an average , the number of neutrons and the energy of a neutron released per fission of a uranium atom are respectively

A slow neutron strikes a nucleus of ._(92)^(235)U splitting it into lighter nuclei of ._(56)^(141)Ba and ._(36)^(92)Kr along with three neutrons. The energy released in this reaction is ( The masses of uranium, barium and krypton of this reaction are 235.043933,140.917700 and 91.895400 u respectively. The mass of a neutron is 1.008665 u

In a particular fission reaction, a ._92U^(235) nucleus captures a slow neutron. The fission products are three neutrons, a ._57La^(142) nucleus and a fission product ._ZX^A . What is the value of Z?

In a nuclear reactor, the neutrons produced in fission reaction have high kinetic energy of the order of few MeV. Whereas the U^(235) nucleus fissions only iwht a slow neutron. In a reactor heavy water (D_(2)O) is used to slow down the neutrons. A neutron hiting a deuterium nucleus slows down quickly. Calculate now many head on, elastic collisions must a neutron have with deuterium nuclei to reduce does not lose energy by any other way apart from collisions with deuterium.
