A hydrocarbon (A) with molecular formula...

A hydrocarbon (A) with molecular formula `C_(8)H_(8)` gave the following reactions :
(i) On shaking with bromine a bromo derivative (B) with the composition `C_(8)H_(8)Br_(2)` was formed.
(ii) The rapid oxidation of hydrocarbon with alkaline `KMnO_(4)` gave a monobasic (C) .
(iii) The acid (C) on distillation with soda lime gave benzene.
Deduce the structures of (A). (B) and (C) and name the compound (A).

The compound (A) forms an addition compound with bromine hence (A) should be an unsaturated hydrocarbon . Since (A) on oxidation gives a monobasic acid which on distillation with soda lime forms benzene (A) should be a benzene derivative having unsaturated side-chain.
The possible hydrocarbon (A) can be :

the name of hydrocarbon (A) is styene.

A hydrocarbon with formula C_(8)H_(18) gives one monochloro derivative. The hydrocarbon can be:

The number of isomers formed by the hydrocarbon with molecular formula C_(5)H_(12) is :

An aromatic kentone (X) has the molecular formula C_(10)H_(12)O_(2) . On vigorous oxidation, it yields a dibasic acid (Y) having the formula C_(9)H_(8)O_(5) which rapidly forms an anhydride on heating. (X) on strong heating with sodium hypobromite gives monobasic acid (Z) with the formula C_(9)H_(10)O_(3) . (Z), when heated with soda lime, gives 3-methylanisole. Interpret the above reactions and deduce the structures of (X), (Y), and (Z).
