Explain the following `:`
(a) Dimethyl ether has a lower boiling point (249K) than ethyl alcohol (351K) although both have same molecular masses.
(b) Ethers have low solubility in water but high solubility in conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(a) Ethyl alcohol has intermolecular hydrogen bonding whereas no hydrogen bonding is present in dimethyl ether.
(b) The oxygen atom in ethers has two unshared electron pairs and therefore, the oxonium salts are formed with acids. This behaviour is not observed in the case of water. Ethers, therefore, have high solubility in conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)` and low solubility in water.

Ethers have low solubility in water but high solubility in conc. H_(2)S_(4) . Explain.

Ethy1 alcohol (C_(2)H_(5)OH) has higher boiling point than dimethyl ether (CH_(3)-O-CH_(3)) although the molecular weight of both are same .

Assertion: Alcohols have higher boiling points than ethers of comparable molecular masses. Reason: Alcohols and ethers are isomerism in nature.

Explain why alcohols and ethers of comparable molecular mass have different boiling points?
