A house wife wanted her house to be white washed. She bought 10 kg of quick lime from the market and dissolved in 30 litres of water. She noticed that water started boiling even when it was not being heated. Give reason for her observation. Write the corresponding equation and name the product formed.

A suspension of slaked lime also called calcium hydroxide is formed when water is added to quick lime.
`CaO(s) + H_(2)O(l) to underset("(Slaked lime)")(Ca(OH)_(2)(s)) + "heat"`
Since the reaction is highly exothermic, the solution started boiling although it was not being heated. The suspension of slaked lime is allowed to cool for sometime, preferably overnight. It is then decanted and the liquid is used for white washing .

Pavni's mother had just washed all the white clothes. She was telling her friend that the whiteness of white clothes was decreasing with every wash and even new white clothes appeared to be like old ones after a few washings. Pavni, who is a student of class 10, was listening to her mother's complaint. Pavni then went to the market and purchased a particular 'dye'. She asked her mother to dissolve a little of this dye in a bucketful of water and soak the washed white clothes in the solution of dye for some time. Pavni's mother did the same. After sometime, the clothes were taken out of the bucket, rinsed well and spread on clothes line for drying. Pavni's mothers observed that the whiteness of washed white clothes had increased a lot after applying a little of the dye. Pavni's mother did not know why on applying little of a certain dye to washed white clothes, their whiteness had increased manifolds. Pavni explained everything to her mother. (a) What could be the 'dye' applied by Pavni's mother to the washed white clothes by dissolving in water ? (b) What does the application of this dye make the washed white clothes look even more white (or shining white) ? Explain. (c) What values are displayed by Pavni in this episode ?

When water is added gradually to a white solid X, a hissing sound is heard and a lot of heat is produced forming a product Y.A suspension of Y in water is applies to the walls of a house during white washing. A clear solution of Y is also used for testing carbon dioxide gas in the laboratory. (a) What could be solid X? Write its chemical formula. (b) What could be product Y ? Write its chemical formula. (c ) What is the common name of the solution of Y which is used for testing carbon dioxide gas? (d) Write chemical equation of the reaction which takes place on adding water to solid X. (e) Which characteristic of chemical reactions is illustrated by this example ?
