(a) Why is Plaster of Paris written as `CaSO_(4)1//2H_(2)O` How is it possible to have half a water molecule attached to `CaSO_(4)` ?

(a) The actual formula of Plaster of Paris is `2CaSO_(4).H_(2)O` which means that one molecule of `H_(2)O` is associated with two molecules of `CaSO_(4).` The formula is simplified and written as `CaSO_(4).1//2H_(2)O.`
(b) Sodium hydrogen carbonate is an essential constituent of antacids because it neutralises the effect of hydrochloric acid which is released in the stomach. That is way it is called antacid.
`NaHCO_(3)+HCl toNaCl+H_(2)O+CO_(2).`
