Rivers form delta on meeting with ocean, why ?

For mation of deltas: The river water contains colloidal particles of sand and clay which carry negative charge. The sea water contains +ve ions such as `Na^(+), Mg^(2+), Ca^(2+)`, etc. As the river water meets sea water, these ions discharge the sand or clay particle which are precipitated in the from of delta.
