Xenon does not form fluorides such as `XeF_(3)` and `XeF_(5)`. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The electronic configuration of Xe is `5s^(2)5p^(6)`. So all the electrons are paired up and when it is excited, then either 2, 4 or 6 etc., electrons will be unpaired There is no scope to get odd number of unpaired electrons in its outermost shell. For this reason, it cannot for `XeF_(3)` or `XeF_(5)` type of compound.
