This is due to structural difference in the solid states. In general, metals have large number of atoms as neighbours-while non-metals have relatively less number of atoms as neighbours. Gold has 12 atoms as neighbours while boron has 6 or less atoms as neighbours in solid states

Explain the following : (a) Aluminium vessel can be used to store conc HNO_(3) . (b) AlCl_(3) forms a dimer, but BCl_(3) does not. ( c) Al metal is frequency used as a reducing agent for the extraction of metal such as Cr , etc. (d) Al cannot be prepared by the electrolysis of aqueous solution of its salt. ( e) The B-X distance is shorter than what is expected theoretically in BX_(3) molecule (X = F, Cl, Br, I) . (f) Althrough the ionisation potential of B(8.30 eV) is less than gold (9.22 eV) , yet B is a non-metal while gold is a metal.

First ionisation energy of copper is higher than those of alkali metals, while second and third ionisation energies are lower. Explain.

The second ionisation energies are higher than the first ionisation energies. This is mainly due to the fact that after the removal of the first electrons, the atom changes inot mono valent position ion. In the ion, the number of electrons decreases but the nuclear charge remains the same. As a result of this, the remaining electrons are held more tightly by the nucleus and it becomes difficult to remove the second electron . Therefore, the value of second ionisation energy . (IE_(2)) , is greater than that of the first ionisation energy (IE_(1)) . Similarly third ionisation energy (IE_(3)) is greater than that of second IE_(2) .
