Give an example of oxidation of halide b...

Give an example of oxidation of halide by another halogen. Explain the feasibility of the reaction.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`2l^(-)(aq) + Cl_(2) rarr l_(2) + 2Cl (aq)`
or (i) `2l (aq) rarr l_(2) (s) 2e^(-)`
(ii) `Cl_(2) (g) + 2e^(-) rarr 2Cl^(-) (aq) `
Thus, l oxidised into `l_(2)` by `Cl_(2)` due to higher oxidised potential of `Cl_(2)` than `l_(2)`.
