How is average velocity different from instantaneous velocity?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Average velocity: It is the ratio of total displacement to total time taken. It is independent of path of the body.
`therefore`Average velocity `=(s_2-s_1)/(t_2-t_1)`
Velocity of a particle at a particular instant of time is known as instantneous velocity. Here time interval is very small.
Only is uniform motion, instantneous velocity= average velocity. For all other cases instantneous velocity may differ from average velocity.

Explain the terms maximum height, velocity and instantaneous velocity. When are they equal?

(A): The Instantaneous velocity does not depend on instantaneous position vector. (R): The instantaneous velocity and average velocity of particle are always same:

We have carefully distinguished between average speed and magnitude of average velocity. No such distinction is necessary when we consider instantaneous speed and magnitude of velocity. The instantaneous speed is always equal to the magnitude of instantaneous velocity. Why ?
