Define average velocity and average speed. When does the magnitude of average velocity become equal to the average speed?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Average velocity: It is defined as the ratio of total displacement to total time taken
Average velocity
`(t o tal displacement)/(t otal time taken )=(x_2-x_1)/(t_2-t_1)`
Average velocity is independent of path followed by the particle. It just deals with initial and final positions of the body.
Averge speed: The ratio of total path length travelled to the total time taken is known as " average speed".
Speed and average speed are scalar quantities so no direction for these quantities.
Average speed `=(Total path l eng th )/(Total time i n t erval)`
When the body is along with the striaght line its average velocity and average speed are equal.

What is average speed?

When does the average velocity become zero ?

A small object is thrown at an angle 45^@ to the horizontal with an initial velocity v_0 The velocity is averaged for first sqrt2 s and the magnitude of average velocity comes out to be same as that of initial velocity, i.e. |v_0| . The magnitude |v_0| will be take, g = 10 m//s^2 )

Statement -A : The acceleration vector of a particle in uniform circular motion averaged over one cycle is a null vector Statement -B : The average speed of a particle is either greater or equal to the magnitude of average velocity of the particle over the same interval of the time.
