Two identical rectangular strips one of copper and the other of steel, are riveted toghter to form a compound bar. What will happen on heating ?

When two dissimilar metals say copper and steel are riveted together that arrangement is called " bimetallic strip" .
When a bimetallic strip is heated copper strip will expand more then steel due to more expansion coefficient .

Since they riveted they must expand as a common piece. As a result bimetallic strip will bend in the form of an arc. For the metallic trip with high ` alpha` its length is more so it is on the outer side . For the strip with less `alpha` its length is less . It will be at the inner side of the arc .

A bimetallic strip is formed out of two identical strips, one of copper and the other of brass. The coefficients of linear expansion of the two metals are alpha_(c) and alpha_(B) .
