While determininig the melting point of ...

While determininig the melting point of ice it was observed that even when ice cubes were being moderates heated using the gas burner the temperature did not rise for sometime till the whole ice melted. Give the possible reason.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Once the melting of ice starts upon heating with the helps of a gas burner the temperature becomes constatn till the entire ice melts to for water in fact the heat energy now absorbed is used up to overcome the intermoleular foces or is used as latent heat of fusion .Terefore the temperature does not rise .For more details consult tedt part (page 14)

Heat abosorbed when 1 g of ice melts at 0^(@)C to form 1g of water at the same temperature is

A student sets up an apparatus to determine to melting point of ice. He takes a beaker half filled with crushed ice and dips a mercury thermometer with an initial reading of room temperature (25^(@)C) in such a way that the bulb of thermometer is surrounded by ice. The correct observation obtained by the student is that :

Why does the temperature remain constant during the melting of ice even though heat is supplied continuously ?

When heat is constantly supplied by a gas burner with small flame to melt ice, then the temperature of ice during melting :

(1) Take a few pieces of ice in a glass beaker as shown in figure. (2) Insert the bulb of a thermometer in ice and measure its temperature. (3) Put the beaker on a stand and heat the ice using a burner. (4) Record the temperature using the thermometer after every minute. (5) As the ice is heated,it starts melting. Stir the mixture of ice and water. (6) Continue the heating even after ice starts melting. (7) Draw a graph of temperature versus time. Define boiling point of a liquid. OR What is boiling point of a liquid ?
