Why do metals not evolve hydrogen gas with nitric acid?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Nitric acid `(HNO_(3))` is a strong oxidising agent. It oxidises hydrogen formed in the reaction to its oxide i.e., water and itself is reduced. For example, zinc metal reacts with conc. `HNO_(3)` to evolve `NO_(2)` gas.
`Zn(s) + 2HNO_(3)("Conc.")rarr Zn(NO_(3))_(2)(aq) +2H`
`(HNO_(3)("Conc.")+H rarr H_(2)O(aq) + NO_(2)(g)xx2)/(Zn(s) + 4HNO_(3)("Conc.")rarr Zn(NO_(3))_(2)(aq) + 2NO_(2)(g) + 2H_(2)O(aq))`
