A metal 'P' when exposed to moist air for longer period of times, loses its shining brown surface and gains green coating, what has happened ? Identify the metal, write the name and chemical formula of green coloured compound. List two ways to prevent this process.

The metal is copper. It is shining brown in colour. In the presence of moist air, surface of the metal acquires a green coating due to the formation of basic copper carbonate which is `Cu(OH)_(2).CuCO_(3)`.
`2Cu+underset("Present in air")ubrace(H_(2)O+CO_(2)+O_(2)) rarr underset(("Green"))underset("Basic copper carbonate")(Cu(OH)_(2)CuCO_(3))`
The process known as corrosion can be prevented by either painting the surface of the metal or applying a coating of grease from time to time so that the water drops may not stick to the surface.

Silver articles become black when kept in open for some time, whereas copper vessels lose their shiny brown surfaces and gain a green coat when kept in open. Name the substances present in air with which these metals react and write the name of the products formed.

When an object made of metal A is kept in air for a considerable time, it loses its shine and becomes almost black due to the formation fo a layer of substance B. when an object made of another metal C is kept in damp air for a considerable time, it gets covered with a green layer of substance D. Metal A is the best conductor of electricity whereas metal C is the next best conductor of electricity. (a) What is metal A? (b) What is metal C? (c) name the substance B. (d) name the substance D. (e) What type of chemcial can be used to remove the green layer from metal C and clean it? Why?

When a grey coloured object made of metal A is left exposed to damp air for a considerable time, it gets covered with a red-brown flaky coating by the process called B which eats up the whole object gradually. It is said that the presence of C and D is necessary for this process to take place. If this object is galvanised by metal E, then the process B does not occur. Name the metal A of which the object is made.
