(b) Zona pellucida layer of the ovum prevents polyspermy in humans. It induces changes in the membrane of the ovum to block the entry of additional sperms, thereby ensuring the entry of one sperm inside the ovum. Also, it initiates the acrosomal reaction between the sperm and the egg at the time of fertilisation.
