a) Write the specific features of the genetic code AUG.
b) Genetic codes can be universal and degenerate. Write about them, giving one example of each.
c) Explain aminoacylation of the tRNA.

Text Solution

a) AUG has dual function.
i) It codes for Methionine (met).
ii) It also act as initiator codon.
b) i) Unambiguous: codon codes for only one amino acid, so it is unambigous and specfic.
ii) Degenerate: Some amino acids are coded by more than one codon, so the code is degenerate
iii) Universal the code is nearly universal. For example, from bacteria to human UUU would code for ATP and linked to their corresponding tRNA. this is called ammionacylation of tRNA or changing of t-RNA. When two charged tRNAS are brought close enough the formation of peptide bond occurs between them. This is catalysed by the enzyme aminoacyl tRNA synthesis.
