(a) Surfactant (phospholipid layer) is a lipoprotein with dipalmitoyllecithin secreted by the lamellar bodies of the great alveolar cells lining the alveoli of the lungs.
It reduces the surface tension of intra-alveolar fluid and keeps the alveoli always open to prevent their collapse
