Explain the following :(b) At higher altitude (i) Respiration is hurried, (ii) RBC count is increased.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(b) (i) At higher altitude, hypoxia i.e., low `O_(2)` tension in blood develops. This stimulates respiratory centre in brain through chemoreceptors in the body. (ii) At higher altitude, renal erythropoietin system is stimulated due to hypoxia. This in turn stimulates erythropoiesis i.e., formation of RBC in red bone marrow.
