(a) Organisms may be conformers or regulators :
Regulators : Some organisms maintain homeostatis by physiological and sometimes behavioural means.
All birds and mammals and few lower vertebrates and invertebretas are capable of thermoregulation and osmoregulation.
In mammals , during summer , sweating occurs profsely and the evaporation brings down temperature of the body.
Example : In mammals during winter, shivering occurs which is a kinds of excercise that produces heat and raises the the body temperature.
Conformers : About ` 99%` of animals and almost all plants cannot maintain a constant internal environment . their body temperature changes with the elimate . For example , Aquantic orgainsms.
(b) There are more conformers than regulators in the animals world.
Thermoregulation is energetically expensive for organisms . This is specially true for small animals like shres's and humming birds.
Since , small animals have a larger surface area relative to volume , they tend to lose body heat very fast when it is cold outside , they have to expand much energy to generate body heat through metabolism. this is the reason that very small animals are really found in polar region.
