Explain why the peroxides and superoxides of the alkali metals act as strong oxidising agents.

Text Solution

On reaction with water, peroxides produce MOH alongwith `H_2O_2` and superoxides produce MOH and `O_2` alongwith `H_2O_2.H_2O_2` is a strong oxidising agent. Thus, peroxides and superoxides of the alkali metals act as strong oxidising agents.
`M_2O_2 + 2H_2O to 2MOH + H_2O_2`
`2MO_2 + 2H_2O to 2MOH + H_2O_2 + O_2`.
