Why calcium is better than sodium in eliminating small amount of water from alcohol?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Both Na and Ca react with water to form the corresponding hydroxide. However, sodium rapidly reacts with alcohol to form sodium ethoxide (`NaOC_2 H_5` ) but calcium reacts quite slowly with alcohol.
`2C_2H_5OH + 2Na to 2C_2 H_5OH Na + H_2 uarr`
Thus, for eliminating small amount of water from alcohol, calcium is better than sodium.
