Why Mg-ribbon continues to burn in presence of `SO_2` gas?

During combustion of Mg-ribbon, the amount of heat generated leads to the decomposition of sulphur dioxide into sulphur and oxygen. This oxygen is responsible for the continued burning of Mg-ribbon.
