Why is Mg(OH)2 less basic than NaOH?...

Why is `Mg(OH)_2` less basic than NaOH?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Due to larger ionic size and lower ionisation enthalpy of Na, the Na-OH bond in NaOH is weaker than the Mg-OH bond in `Mg(OH)_2`.Thus, NaOH is more basic than `Mg(OH)_2`.
