Explain why the elements of group-2 form `M^(2+)` ions but not `M^(3+)` ions.

Loss of third electron from group-2 metal atoms causes loss of stable noble gas configuration and for this reason group- 2 elements form `M^(2+)` ions but not `M^(3+)` ions.
