How can you prepare propyne from magnesium carbide?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When magnesium carbide `(MgC_2)` is heated, `Mg_2C_3` (magnesium allylide) is obtained. This on hydrolysis, produces propyne `(CH_3C-=CH)`.
`MgC_2overset(Delta)to Mg_2C_3 overset(H_2O)to Mg(OH)_2 + CH_3C-=CH`
